Combating Daesh: Insights into Malaysia’s Counter-Terrorism Experience and the Deradicalisation of Former Detainees

Malaysia is no exception when it comes to the Daesh threat. Several vulnerable Muslim populations have been previously targeted by via specific modus operandi fulfil terrorism agenda. Based on a persistent concern about Daesh-related issues and their consequences, this article critically explores role of security agency, Counter-Terrorism Division within Royal Police (RMP), in addressing radicalisation Malaysia. It examines process effectiveness top down ‘soft’ approaches undertaken RMP rehabilitation deradicalisation former detainees before they rejoin society. The research qualitative, based focus group discussion in-depth interviews with representatives from Counter Terrorism Division, experts, government officials detainees. findings show that RMP’s efforts curb intimidation effective terms decreasing number new incidents, militant recruitment establishment networks cells. introduction ‘Module 30′, which involves theological psychological improvement, civil order, along vocational training ‘lifelong-monitoring’, has significantly contributed rehabilitating deradicalising majority convicts Malaysia, such embrace peace renounce violence religious extremism.
